Job Summmary

The position is located in the Business Office Services, Patient Registration Section at the Standing Rock Service Unit, Fort Yates IHS Hospital. The Incumbent serves a Medical Support Assistant and works in various clinical settings (that is; Ambulatory Care, Emergency Unit, Inpatient Unit A/P/O B, Cannonball satellite clinic on a rotation basis and provides assistance in determining eligibility for direct care services and obtaining registration (demographic and third party) information.

Job Duties

Interviewing patients for eligibility and to determine eligibility for programs. Scheduling appointments, answering phones and coordinating with other staff in regard to clinic needs. Updating patients as they are checking in and collecting required Business Office information such as insurance cards, enrollment information, birth certificates, social security cards, court orders and ID's or other info as needed. Printing appointment letters, filing, scanning of documents and other duties as assigned. Qualification

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-4: one year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to perform the work of this position at the GS-4 level. OR I have 2 years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR I have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualification s for this position. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify an applicant for the GS-4 level. GS-5: one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level that equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples include: Determining eligibility by verifying whether documented proof offered meets the requirements for new patients seeking facility services. Obtaining and processing demographic and insurance information for patient registration, alternate resources, contract health services or related purposes; interviews patients to obtain pertinent registration information; maintaining an appointment system by computer and/or appointment book; assisting staff in preparing patient transfer paperwork. OR I have 4 years of education above the high school level. OR I have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-05 grade level. GS-6: one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level that equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples include: Determining eligibility by verifying whether documented proof offered meets the requirements for new patients seeking facility services. Interviewing techniques to assists patients in completing new or updated forms, Business Office functions, understanding policies and procedures and refer inquiries to appropriate personnel. Experience working with Electronic Health Record or similar systems; update pertinent patient information, key updated information into patient files, scanning and filing patient documents. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands: Work is mostly sedentary, with some walking, standing and bending while interviewing patients and preparing the appropriate paperwork for treatment of a patient or initiating a chart. Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required.
