Job Duties
The Supervisory Language Specialist directs the translation and interpreter program for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of California for both in-house and contractor language specialists to support AUSAs in the investigating and litigating cases. The employee must be a Federally Certified Court Interpreter by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts in the Spanish language, with mastery of the Spanish language dialects, political, economic, cultural peculiarities, and the history and current conditions of each country. Typical duties include: Supervises subordinate staff. Directs subordinate staff in translations from both recorded and written material and summaries. Directs work of subordinate staff to translate and/or summarize source documents and similar material, assuring accuracy in reflecting meaning of original document. Serves as expert source of information to AUSAs regarding various facets of Spanish as well as history and current conditions, culture and linguistic advisor on Spanish speaking countries Keeps up-to-date with developments on the international scene by researching a wide array of topics, using literature, background reports, reference books, and the like. Provides policy guidance to contractor language specialists, and ensures work completed by outside language specialists is comprehensive and accurate.

Qualification
GS-13 - To be qualified, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level. Specialized experience can be defined as experience involving expert translations and interpretations from live, recorded and written material without regard to the level of difficulty, subject matter, terminology, dialogue, idioms, colloquialisms, or degrees of inflection from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish. Examples of specialized experience may include: interpreting at legal conferences that may include attorneys, defendants, and/or witnesses in which agreements are negotiated, preparing Spanish-speaking witnesses for trials, preparing certified transcription/translations and translations of court documents, law enforcement reports, etc., testifying in federal court when challenges are presented to the certified transcription or translation presented as evidence, providing sight translation to attorneys, and providing Spanish/English and English/Spanish interpretations needed in criminal and civil matters. Selective Placement Factor(s): A selective placement factor is determined to be essential for successful performance in this position. Those candidates who do not meet the following selective placement factor will be rated "not qualified" for the position: Selective Placement Factor: Must be a Federally Certified Court Interpreter by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts in the Spanish language.
